About BOSS
BOSS traces back to 1973, when Roland founder Ikutaro Kakehashi established it as a sister electronics company under the name MEG Electronics, later renamed BOSS. The brand released its first pedal, the CE-1 Chorus Ensemble, in 1976, then launched the now-iconic compact pedal format in 1977, solving the switching noise, battery access, and on/off visibility problems that plagued earlier stompboxes. BOSS was fully absorbed into Roland Corporation in 2018 and now operates as a division of Roland, headquartered alongside it in Hamamatsu, Japan.
BOSS's product range spans compact effects pedals, Waza Craft boutique reissues, multi-effects floorboards, pedal and clip-on tuners, and guitar amplifiers. The Katana modeling amp line, introduced in 2016, grew into one of the best-selling guitar amp series in the world within less than a decade of launch. In our own testing, BOSS earned top marks across amps, distortion, reverb, multi-effects, and tuner categories, with the rugged compact chassis it introduced in the 1970s still underpinning nearly everything the brand makes today.
