About Ernie Ball
Ernie Ball got its start in 1958 when Ernie Ball, a steel guitar player and club musician, opened what's widely credited as the world's first all-guitar retail store in Los Angeles. He kept hearing the same complaint from working guitarists: the heavy-gauge strings of the era made bending and fast playing brutal on the fingers. In 1962 he answered it by rolling out the Slinky line, the first strings built and marketed specifically for the lighter touch rock and roll players wanted, and the name has stuck as shorthand for an entire style of playing ever since.
The company remains family-owned, now led by Brian Ball, and manufactures its strings at its own facility in Coachella, California, under the same in-house quality control it has run for decades. Beyond strings, the Ernie Ball catalog spans picks, straps, cables, capos, slides, and the volume pedals the brand is also well known for, with products distributed through thousands of music stores worldwide.
