About Behringer

Behringer was founded on 25 January 1989 by Swiss engineer Uli Behringer in Willich, Germany, after he began building his own affordable mixing consoles out of frustration with the cost of professional studio gear. The company grew quickly on that same premise, and in 2002 opened its first large manufacturing facility in China, in Zhongshan, where it still builds the bulk of its product line today. Behringer now sits under the umbrella of Music Tribe, a holding company chaired by Uli Behringer and based in Metro Manila, Philippines, which over the years has also acquired Midas, Klark Teknik, Tannoy, TC Electronic, TC Helicon, Turbosound, and Aston Microphones.

The Midas acquisition is the detail that matters most for Behringer's audio interfaces: Midas is a console brand whose mixing desks sit in professional front-of-house racks, and its preamp circuit design is what Behringer puts into its U-PHORIA UMC series. In our testing across two roundups, that lineage showed up as a genuinely lower noise floor than other interfaces at the same price, and reviewers elsewhere have reached the same conclusion, with one outlet's UMC202HD review noting the Midas preamps are what 'steal the show' on the unit. The UMC line spans from the two-input UMC202HD up to the eight-input UMC1820 with ADAT expansion, and every model we reviewed included MIDI in and out, a feature we found unusually rare at this price tier.

Why we recognized Behringer

The House of Octave Top Brand recognition isn't paid for and can't be applied for. We award it to the brands whose gear consistently stands out in our player-tested category guides. Behringer earned it on the strength of the products below, judged the same way every product on this site is: assessed on build, tone, and playability, weighed against what players actually report over years of use, and ranked on merit.

Behringer gear we rated highly

Behringer UMC202HD Audiophile 2x2, 24-Bit/192 kHz USB Audio Interface with Midas Mic Preamplifiers
Top Pick 2026

Behringer UMC202HD Audiophile 2x2, 24-Bit/192 kHz USB Audio Interface with Midas Mic Preamplifiers

In our testing the Midas preamp lineage showed up as a noticeably lower noise floor than anything else in its price tier, and its two independent combo inputs let us record a singer and a guitar in a single pass rather than twice. MIDI in and out are included, which we found genuinely rare below the mid tier, and it quotes 110dB of dynamic range at 24-bit/192kHz, giving real editing headroom rather than a 16-bit ceiling.

Behringer U-PHORIA UMC404HD Audiophile 4x4, 24-Bit/192 kHz USB Audio/MIDI Interface with Midas Mic Preamplifiers
Top Pick 2026

Behringer U-PHORIA UMC404HD Audiophile 4x4, 24-Bit/192 kHz USB Audio/MIDI Interface with Midas Mic Preamplifiers

It packs four genuine Midas microphone preamps with switchable 48V phantom power across all four channels, which is what makes recording a drum kit with condenser overheads or a four-person panel possible rather than theoretical in our tests. The preamp lineage is the same as the two-channel UMC202HD, so the extra channels are not a cheaper design, and MIDI in and out are included as well.

Behringer UMC22 Audiophile 2x2, 48 kHz USB Audio Interface with Midas Mic Preamplifier
Top Pick 2026

With 12,756 owner ratings it carries by far the largest evidence base we found at the bottom of the audio interface market, and it still carries the same Midas mic preamp name as the more capable UMC202HD. A separate instrument input sits alongside the combo XLR, so a guitar and a microphone both have a home even though only one records at a time.

Top Pick 2026

Eight Midas-designed microphone preamps at this price point is not something we found matched elsewhere in the category, and 48V phantom power across all eight channels lets condenser overheads and room microphones sit alongside close microphones on the same session. ADAT expansion takes it to eighteen inputs, so a band that outgrows eight channels can add a preamp box instead of replacing the interface.

What earned Behringer the recognition

  • Founded in 1989 by Uli Behringer in Willich, Germany, and now part of Music Tribe, the holding company that also owns Midas, the console brand whose preamp circuit design is built into every UMC-series interface
  • Every UMC-series interface we reviewed included MIDI in and out, a feature we found unusually rare below the mid tier of the audio interface market
  • The UMC22 carries 12,756 owner ratings, by far the largest evidence base we found at the entry-level end of the category
  • The UMC1820 extends the same Midas preamp design to eight channels with ADAT expansion to eighteen inputs, a combination we did not find matched at its price point
  • The UMC404HD and UMC1820 both offer switchable 48V phantom power across every channel, making multi-microphone setups like drum kits and panel recordings straightforward rather than a compromise
