About Solid State Logic

Solid State Logic was founded in 1969 by the late Colin Sanders CBE, whose earliest products were switching systems for pipe organs, a field that gave the company its name. Sanders moved into console building at Acorn Studios in Oxfordshire, and by 1976 had built the first SL 4000 console. The breakthrough came in 1979 with the SL 4000 E Series, which introduced flexible in-line architecture, per-channel dynamics and a stereo bus compressor, and was widely adopted by major commercial recording studios through the 1980s. SSL moved its headquarters to Begbroke Manor in Oxfordshire in 1986, where the company remains based today as part of the Audiotonix group, which acquired it in 2017.

SSL carried that console lineage into a desktop USB interface with the launch of the SSL 2 and SSL 2+, built around the same 4K analog circuit found on its 4000-series consoles. Sound on Sound's original review found them to offer "a compelling balance of form, features and audio quality at highly competitive prices," and the publication returned to review the current MKII versions in 2024. Our own testing reached a similar view of the SSL 2 MKII: it carried the most preamp gain of any interface in its category, and its loopback runs in true stereo rather than the mono-summed loopback more common at that price.

What Solid State Logic makes

Solid State Logic's catalog runs wider than the gear we review. The lines we know best from our own testing are marked with a star:

•

SL 4000 & 9000 Series Consoles

Large-format analog recording consoles built on the in-line architecture SSL introduced in 1979, still the reference point for the company's circuit design

•

System T

Networked digital consoles for broadcast, live sound reinforcement and post-production

★

SSL 2 Series

USB-C desktop audio interfaces carrying the 4K analog circuit and stereo bus compressor heritage from SSL's consoles into a home-studio format — featured on House of Octave

•

Fusion & Bus+

Stereo bus processors and compressors that put SSL's console-bus circuitry into standalone outboard hardware

•

UF8 & UC1 Controllers

DAW control surfaces built to integrate with SSL's own software and third-party mixing plugins

•

SSL Native Plugins

Software emulations of SSL's console channel strip, bus compressor and EQ circuits for use inside a DAW

Why we recognized Solid State Logic

The House of Octave Top Brand recognition isn't paid for and can't be applied for. We award it to the brands whose gear consistently stands out in our player-tested category guides. Solid State Logic earned it on the strength of the products below, judged the same way every product on this site is: assessed on build, tone, and playability, weighed against what players actually report over years of use, and ranked on merit.

Solid State Logic gear we rated highly

Solid State Logic SSL 2 MKII - 2x2 USB Audio Interface
Top Pick 2026

Solid State Logic SSL 2 MKII - 2x2 USB Audio Interface

In our testing, the SSL 2 MKII carried the most preamp gain of any interface in this category, at 64dB plus up to 27dB more in LINE mode, enough to drive any dynamic microphone with headroom to spare. Its loopback runs in true stereo rather than mono-summed, so a stream keeps its left-right image instead of collapsing to the centre, and the 4K button is a real analog circuit borrowed from SSL's 4000-series console, adding high-frequency lift and gentle harmonic saturation at the input stage rather than in software.

  • The SSL 2 MKII's 4K button is a genuine analog circuit carried over from SSL's 4000-series consoles, adding high-frequency lift and harmonic saturation at the input stage rather than through a software plugin
  • Sound on Sound's original review of the SSL 2 and 2+ found "a compelling balance of form, features and audio quality at highly competitive prices," and returned to review the current MKII generation in 2024
  • In our own testing, the SSL 2 MKII carried the most preamp gain of any interface we reviewed in its category, with true stereo loopback rather than the mono-summed loopback more common at that level
