About RODE
RODE traces back to Freedman Electronics, a Sydney, Australia audio company opened in 1967 by Henry and Astrid Freedman. Their son Peter Freedman revived the business in 1990 under the RODE name, launching the NT1 studio condenser microphone, which went on to become one of the best-selling microphones in the industry. RODE has since expanded from studio microphones into wireless systems, on-camera shotguns, podcasting gear, and USB audio interfaces, and the company has been covered by outlets including Forbes, Sound On Sound, and PetaPixel for its engineering and its Australian manufacturing base.
RODE backs selected microphones with a warranty that extends up to 10 years when the buyer registers their purchase, well beyond the industry-standard one-year term. Our own reviews found that same attention to a specific use case in the AI-Micro interface: an ultra-compact, driverless USB-C box built around getting a lavalier or dynamic microphone into a phone or tablet rather than a desktop setup.

Why we recognized RODE
The House of Octave Top Brand recognition isn't paid for and can't be applied for. We award it to the brands whose gear consistently stands out in our player-tested category guides. RODE earned it on the strength of the products below, judged the same way every product on this site is: assessed on build, tone, and playability, weighed against what players actually report over years of use, and ranked on merit.

Rode AI-Micro USB Audio Interface,Black
In our testing this was the only genuinely pocket-sized interface in the roundup, small enough to live permanently in a bag rather than sit on a desk. Native USB-C to Lightning support means it is built for an iPhone or iPad first rather than adapted to one, and it needs no drivers on any platform, working the moment it is plugged into a Mac, PC, Android phone, or tablet. A 3.5mm input takes a lavalier microphone directly alongside the combo XLR jack, making it a genuine two-source recorder for interviews and video work.

- The AI-Micro was the only interface in our budget roundup built specifically for mobile recording, with native USB-C to Lightning support for iPhone and iPad rather than an adapter-dependent workaround
- It is fully driverless across Mac, Windows, Android, and iOS, so it works the instant it is plugged in rather than requiring an install step that trips up other budget interfaces in our testing
- A 3.5mm lavalier input sits alongside the combo XLR jack, giving it a genuine two-source recording path for interviews and run-and-gun video that most compact interfaces skip
- RODE backs eligible microphones with up to a 10-year warranty on registration, a longer commitment than the industry-standard one-year term
- RODE's engineering has drawn coverage from Forbes, Sound On Sound, and PetaPixel, reflecting a reputation built since the 1990 launch of the original NT1
