About MOTU
MOTU (Mark of the Unicorn) was founded in 1981 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, by Jason Linhart, Craig Finseth, Scott Layson Burson, and Brian Hess. The company began building music software in 1984 and released Performer in 1985, one of the first graphical MIDI sequencing programs for the Macintosh. That software line grew into Digital Performer, MOTU's flagship digital audio workstation, and the company later expanded into audio hardware with early FireWire interfaces including the rack-mounted MOTU 828.
MOTU introduced its M Series of compact USB-C interfaces, the M2 and M4, in 2019, followed by the four-in/six-out M6 in 2022. The M2 is built around an ESS Sabre32 Ultra DAC, the same converter family used in far more expensive studio gear, and is rated for up to 120dB of dynamic range with round-trip latency as low as 2.5ms. MusicRadar covered the M Series expansion as MOTU pushed further into the entry-level interface market, and Sweetwater's own listing highlights the M2's low latency and its two mic preamps with individual gain control and phantom power.

What MOTU makes
MOTU's catalog runs wider than the gear we review. The lines we know best from our own testing are marked with a star:
M Series Audio Interfaces
Compact USB-C interfaces launched with the M2 and M4 in 2019 and extended with the M6 in 2022, built around ESS Sabre32 Ultra DACs with full-colour LCD metering — featured on House of Octave
828 Series Studio Interfaces
Rack-mounted studio interfaces connecting over USB3, offering high channel-count I/O with onboard mixing and effects processing
MIDI Express Interfaces
Multi-port MIDI interface hardware, including the MIDI Express XT and MIDI Express 128, tracing back to MOTU's original MIDI sequencing business
Digital Performer
MOTU's flagship digital audio workstation software, descended from the original Performer MIDI sequencer released in 1985
Virtual Instruments
Software synthesizers and sample libraries including MachFive 3 and Ethno Instrument
Why we recognized MOTU
The House of Octave Top Brand recognition isn't paid for and can't be applied for. We award it to the brands whose gear consistently stands out in our player-tested category guides. MOTU earned it on the strength of the products below, judged the same way every product on this site is: assessed on build, tone, and playability, weighed against what players actually report over years of use, and ranked on merit.
MOTU gear we rated highly
Motu M2 2x2 USB-C Audio Interface with XLR-XLR Cable Bundle
In our testing, the M2's ESS Sabre32 DAC gave it the strongest sound-quality reputation of any interface we reviewed in its price bracket, and its loopback worked identically on macOS and Windows, where several competitors we tested offered loopback on only one platform or none at all. Full-colour LCD peak meters show both input and output levels directly on the unit, and roughly 60dB of preamp gain covers most dynamic microphones with headroom to spare.

- Founded in 1981 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, MOTU built Performer, one of the first graphical MIDI sequencing programs for the Macintosh, in 1985, and that software line grew into today's Digital Performer DAW
- The M2's ESS Sabre32 Ultra DAC, the same converter family found in far more expensive studio gear, gives it a rated dynamic range of 120dB and round-trip latency as low as 2.5ms
- In our testing, the M2 was the only interface in its price bracket with loopback that worked identically on both macOS and Windows, where several competitors we tested supported loopback on only one platform or not at all
- Full-colour LCD peak meters display both input and output levels directly on the unit, a feature most interfaces at this price substitute with a single clip LED
- MOTU extended the M Series with the M6 in 2022, carrying the same converter and metering approach introduced with the M2 and M4 in 2019 into a higher-channel-count model
