About Hartke
Hartke was founded in 1984 in Bloomfield, New Jersey, when Larry Hartke built the first Hartke bass cabinet for bass legend Jaco Pastorius out of a modified Ampeg SVT 8x10 loudspeaker cabinet. The company's first production model, the 410XL, shipped in 1985, and Hartke has stayed a dedicated bass-amplification brand ever since rather than a general amp maker with a bass line added on.
In 1986 Hartke moved its distribution to Samson Technologies, which remains the exclusive worldwide distributor of Hartke amplifiers, cabinets and combos today. The brand's signature contribution is HyDrive driver technology, which fuses a paper cone with an aluminum center to combine the warmth of a traditional paper cone with the punch and attack of an aluminum one, the same technology behind the bright, articulate low-volume tone we heard from the compact HD15 combo in our testing.

Why we recognized Hartke
The House of Octave Top Brand recognition isn't paid for and can't be applied for. We award it to the brands whose gear consistently stands out in our player-tested category guides. Hartke earned it on the strength of the products below, judged the same way every product on this site is: assessed on build, tone, and playability, weighed against what players actually report over years of use, and ranked on merit.
Hartke gear we rated highly
Hartke HD15
The HD15's HyDrive driver pairs a paper cone with an aluminum center, giving this small amp a bright, articulate attack that cuts through at low volume, with fingerstyle definition and slap snap holding up even through a compact 6.5-inch speaker. In our testing it stood out as the most desk-friendly amp in the roundup with a real speaker, and its top-mounted volume and three-band EQ panel means no menus and no learning curve to get in the way of practicing.

- Hartke has built bass-specific speakers since 1984, when the first cabinet was made for Jaco Pastorius, and the HD15's voicing reflects decades of designing for bass frequencies rather than adapting a guitar cabinet.
- HyDrive driver technology, a hybrid paper-and-aluminum cone, gives the brand's amps a distinctively bright, articulate attack that other small combos in our testing struggled to match.
- The HD15 packs a real 6.5-inch HyDrive driver into a cabinet compact enough to sit on a desk, a combination few other amps in its size class manage.
- A straightforward top-mounted control panel, just volume and a three-band EQ, keeps the amp simple enough to disappear into daily practice.
- Hartke's amplifiers, cabinets and combos have been distributed worldwide by Samson Technologies since 1986, reflecting a long, stable market presence.
