About ESP LTD
ESP was founded in Tokyo, Japan in 1975 by Hisatake Shibuya, originally under the name Electric Sound Products, making premium replacement parts for electric guitars and basses before growing into a full guitar builder. ESP components reached the US market in 1983, and the company began building custom instruments for New York-based artists the following year; guitarist George Lynch of Dokken became its first signature artist after discovering ESP's guitars on tour in Japan. Today ESP's US operations are headquartered in North Hollywood, California, home to its American custom shop.
In 1995, ESP launched the LTD series to bring its core body shapes, set-neck construction, and design language to a more accessible price point through manufacturing partners outside Japan. ESP has since become closely associated with metal and hard rock: Metallica's Kirk Hammett has been an ESP signature artist for more than three decades, and bandmate James Hetfield plays ESP's Truckster models. Above LTD sits the Japan-built E-II series, and above that the hand-crafted ESP Original Series and full custom instruments built at ESP's Custom Shop in Japan.
