About Catalinbread
Catalinbread was founded in 2003 by Nicholas Harris, who started the company on his kitchen table in Seattle before relocating it to Portland, Oregon in 2006, where every pedal has been hand-built ever since. The catalog grew from early hits like the Semaphore Tremolo into a full line spanning overdrive, fuzz, distortion, delay, reverb, and modulation, with many designs rooted in faithfully recreating specific pieces of classic outboard gear rather than chasing generic effects. After Harris's death in 2016, the company was acquired in 2020 by musicians and studio owners Kyle Sears and Brandon Rush, who have continued building the pedals in-house in Portland.
The Topanga Spring Reverb, the pedal that earned this award, is Catalinbread's take on Fender's classic outboard 6G15 tube spring-tank reverb, built around a Spin FV-1 chip and voiced for the authentic flutter, cluck, and drippy splash of a real vintage tank. Premier Guitar included the Topanga in its spring-reverb pedal review roundup, noting that its Dwell, Tone, and Mix controls behave the way an outboard unit's would, with a full-wet Mix setting that lets a player run 100 percent reverb, something an original spring tank could never do.
