About Band Industries
Band Industries, Inc. was founded in 2012 by two engineers who are also working musicians, Bassam Jalgha (an oud player) and Hassane Slaibi (a flute player), and it builds the Roadie line of automatic instrument tuners. The company is unusual in this category because it did not start by improving the clip-on tuner: it replaced the act of turning the peg. A Roadie clamps onto a machine head and a motor brings the string to pitch on its own, which makes it less a tuner than a small, purpose-built power tool for guitarists.
The line has been built in public and refined over four generations. The original Roadie Tuner was crowdfunded in 2013, raising $178,613 from 2,002 backers; a 2017 campaign for the Roadie 2 and Roadie Bass raised $502,931; and the Roadie 3 followed in 2020 with $449,310 across Kickstarter and Indiegogo. That decade of iteration is visible in the product we tested: the Roadie 3 is a standalone device with its own screen and stored tuning library rather than a phone accessory. The company's engineering has been recognised outside the guitar press too, with a TechCrunch Disrupt Audience Choice Award and a Gold Medal at the London Design Awards in 2014, a place on Entrepreneur magazine's "100 Brilliant Companies" list the same year, and Best Music Startup at Primavera Pro in Barcelona in 2018.
