About Ludwig
Ludwig's own history page dates the company to 1909, when William F. Ludwig and Theobald Ludwig founded the Ludwig & Ludwig Drum Company. Ludwig describes its beginnings as Chicago, Illinois, and its history page records the move of operations from Chicago to Monroe, North Carolina in 1984. The Black Beauty snare drum, introduced in the 1920s, is still produced.
The current Ludwig catalog covers drum sets, snare drums, hardware, accessories, concert drums, marching drums, student percussion, mallet instruments and electronic instruments. Within drum sets, the Ludwig site lists series from Legacy Mahogany, Legacy Maple and Classic Maple through Evolution, Breakbeats and The Pocket Kit, plus the Accent series. Ludwig describes Accent as an all-inclusive 5-piece drum set made up of a shell pack, a 3-piece cymbal pack and a hardware pack that includes a throne.

Why we recognized Ludwig
The House of Octave Top Brand recognition isn't paid for and can't be applied for. We award it to the brands whose gear consistently stands out in our player-tested category guides. Ludwig earned it on the strength of the products below, judged the same way every product on this site is: assessed on build, tone, and playability, weighed against what players actually report over years of use, and ranked on merit.
Ludwig gear we rated highly
Ludwig Accent Drive 5-Piece Drum Set
Ludwig's own entry-level kit, sold as a complete outfit. It uses a standard full-size two-up tom layout: a 22x16 bass drum, 10x8 and 12x9 rack toms, a 16x16 floor tom and a 14-inch snare, so standard heads and cases fit when it is time to upgrade. The hardware is Ludwig 200 Series double-braced cymbal and hi-hat stands, a 201 Series double-braced snare stand and a chain-drive kick pedal. It ships with 13-inch hi-hats, a 16-inch crash, a drum throne and sticks, and our guide picks it as a beginner drum set for adults.
